The environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM) is intended to test samples in low vacuum mode.
High vacuum conditions are available in standard scanning electron microscopes in the sample chamber, and variable pressure (VP) scanning electron microscopes allow operating pressures up to a maximum of 500 Pa.
