As part of the Federal Government’s research and development projects for the peaceful use of nuclear energy, a number of research reactors, pilot and experimental facilities have been built and operated in previous years. On the basis of existing agreements and company law obligations at the research centres of the Helmholtz Community (HGF Centres), the Federal Government – once these programmes have been completed – is required under the statutory provisions to ensure environmentally sound decommissioning and disposal of the installations under its responsibility. In order to carry out decommissioning and disposal tasks in accordance with the state of scientific and technical knowledge, the institutions concerned are institutionally funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as the contracting authority (AG). Decommissioning research projects will be funded with a view to the development of new dismantling technologies. The BMBF intends to entrust a project promoter (PT) to assist the BMBF in the technical and administrative planning, implementation and control of the tasks in order to achieve the objective and efficient implementation of the funding of research projects under the theme ‘Supporting Research Projects in the Decommissioning and Decommissioning of Nuclear Experimental Facilities’. The PT activity is bound by the guidelines and instructions of the BMBF in the context of the contracted activities. The project promoter involves the preparation, technical and administrative management at all stages of the funding (from advice to interested parties and applicants to the assessment of applications, including assessment, supervision during the period up to the verification of the use of funds, documentation of BMBF projects, and support for the strategic development of the funding priorities in the assisted area ‘Supporting research projects in the decommissioning and dismantling of nuclear experimental facilities’. In the area of decommissioning-related research, the aim is to develop concepts and technologies for the treatment and dismantling of a wide range of nuclear installations and systems. Thematically, the main funding priorities will be as follows: — Slicing technologies – Decontamination techniques – Remote handling techniques – Remediation procedures – Procedures for minimising, characterising, treating and conditioning nuclear waste The main production objectives are: —Developing innovative technologies and processes to increase the efficiency and reliability of dismantling nuclear installations – Accelerating and reducing costs – Reducing radioactive waste and increasing the recycling rate – Minimisation of radiological exposure for persons involved in dismantling – Building, further development and maintenance of scientific and technical competence, including support for young people, are detailed in the procurement documents.
