Description

This is a seasonal grazing (01/05 to 31/10) with a herd of cattle of at least 45 LU grazing on an area of 676 ha on the Kalmthoutse Heide. The herd may grow to a maximum of 60 LU over the duration of the contract. In the winter period (01/11 to 31/12) on the Steertse heathland, a parcel with grassland, heathland and forest of 47ha is grazed with a maximum of 0.5 LU/ha year. In the period (01/01 – 30/04) and for part of the herd in the winter period, the contract holder must provide alternative shelter himself. This herd of cattle should consist of a breed that can withstand food-poor habitats and the extreme weather conditions on the heath. The main purpose of cattle grazing on the Kalmthoutse Heide is to graze pipe straw in the heath during the growing season in order to increase biodiversity and reduce the risk of fire. In addition, it brings structure and spreads seeds and nutrients. Grasslands in the Steertse Heide are offered to keep part of the herd in the area in the autumn as long as the condition allows.
