Description

With Friedenstein Castle and its parks in Gotha, Thuringia has a unique monumental ensemble of great radiance. The enormous castle with its two mighty corner towers forms a landmark in which an impressive building history is reflected. With its state rooms, the Ekhof Theatre, the gardens and the art collections, Friedenstein Castle has an outstanding cultural-historical status and an ever-increasing attractiveness as a destination for cultural tourism. At Friedenstein Castle, the renovation of extensive areas, combined with restoration measures, is necessary. With the exception of the already renovated areas, extensive static-constructive upgrading measures are necessary throughout the castle building. The "Refurbishment of Friedenstein Castle and Ducal Park in Gotha" has been planned in partial construction phases since 2017. A first section has already been implemented if the current overall operation is maintained. The important architectural and garden architectural ensemble is to be preserved and presented as an outstanding historical work of art for posterity. The extensive and elaborate static-constructive component excavations, wood protection investigations and inventories of the technical building equipment carried out so far in the castle showed that a complex damage picture exists. In order to realize the project goals, the funding volume was increased, which is associated with a new tender for the architect's service. As part of the funding project, the refurbishment of two extensive sub-areas is planned, for which the architectural services are now being re-tendered separately. To implement the project, competent specialist planners for the respective project areas with a special ability in dealing with monuments were found in a first step, which are now to be completed for the TP II.1, West Tower / West Wing by an object planner (architect). The aim is the holistic restoration of the monument and the permanent preservation of the substance in its traditional state for future generations. The collections are to be preserved, presented and conveyed in their ancestral place and in their original context. Optimal and up-to-date working conditions are to be created for the work of the local institutions. Existing structural and structural damage and defects, including in the high-quality interiors, must be eliminated and the building must be refurbished for the intended uses (museum, library, events, administration). Minimally invasive and low-tec solutions should be applied. The specific task includes the comprehensive repair of the west tower and west wing, the emergency safety of the north wing as well as the basic safety of TGA and fire protection technology for the entire castle. In close cooperation with the Thuringian Palaces and Gardens Foundation, representatives of the heritage authority, users and other specialist planners, the goal of preservation of historic monuments must be further developed and realised in a way that is compatible with historic monuments, is eligible for approval and is sustainable. The construction measures are planned and implemented as part of the joint funding project of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Free State of Thuringia in sub-construction phases in accordance with the requirements of the Federal Government's Guideline for Grant Buildings (RZBau). The cost estimate under LPH 2 shows a gross investment requirement of around EUR 51 million for the cost groups 100-700 (including the building material to be co-processed) in accordance with DIN 276. The investment needs of EUR 51 million are set as a cost ceiling on which the planning is to be further aligned. The gross floor area of the west wing and west tower is approximately 12,700 m2.
