Description

The casino building on the site of ZDF broadcasting centre 1 at Lerchenberg in Mainz was examined as part of a fire protection inventory. As a result of these documented fire-protection technical assessments, it was found that various types of remedial measures were necessary.
The building was constructed free-standing in the early 1970s in reinforced concrete construction. It has maximum dimensions of approx. 109 m in length and approx. 58 m in width. The various uses are divided into two sub-slots, one earth floor, one intermediate floor and two upper floors.
The casino building also houses many special functions of the broadcasting centre, in particular the canteen with large kitchens, restaurants, shops, travel agency, banking branch, demonstration rooms, conference areas and exhibition spaces.
As the casino was rebuilt several times in the 35 years of its existence (the conference zone (K-Zone) was extended in 1993-1995), sub-areas have been repurposed and additional uses have been integrated, there are discrepancies with the building permits.
In order to bring the building into line with current use under fire protection and building law, planning services have already been commissioned by the ZDF to draw up a fire protection plan, an application for change of use and to plan and tender for fire protection upgrades.
The fire protection concept for the house in its current use includes the whole building with all secondary areas and basement levels.
The fire protection concept was divided into 19 individual measures and a comprehensive action-related cost statement was drawn up. The individual actions were embedded in a 6-year plan (2012 to 2017).
These services consist essentially of painting and plastering work for the sub-projects Meistermannhalle, ZDF-Shop, K-Zone EG and escape staircase to be carried out in 2012.
The above-mentioned measures must be carried out in the ZDF in the case of ongoing operations. This means that all noise-related activities must be carried out during the weekend and at night. In order to maintain operations, activities often need to be interrupted on a daily basis. Many works can only be done in difficult time slots to maintain the operation of the ZDF.
