Description

In the medium and long term, electrical grids at all voltage levels will develop into power electrified grids with decentralized generation, energy storage and bidirectional power flows. To answer the emerging questions, a previously non-existent research and test infrastructure is necessary, which is why an adequate investigation is currently not possible. The new construction 0675 of the High Power Grid Lab (HPGL) will provide a building for a Europe-wide unique research and test infrastructure in the multi-MW area, which closes exactly this existing area. In combination with the existing Energy Lab 2.0 and the associated knowledge about the existing network behavior as well as its real-time simulation, the HPGL at KIT will create a holistic power hardware-in-the-loop (PHiL) test environment with which the future questions arising from the structural change of the European energy network can be adequately investigated.
