Early Contractor Involvement, extension of Cityringen to Nordhavn
Nordhavn is currently Copenhagen’s fastest growing locality. The Nordhavn area is planned to grow to approximately 35.000 residents and 28.000 working places by 2050. Well-functioning public transportation is a crucial part of the growth of Nordhavn, and the M4 Cityringen metroline is therfore planned to be extended from the existing Orientkaj Station to outer Nordhavn with 2 new stations. The customers of the Copenhagen Metro expect a high level of service with functional and attractive infrastructure. The extension will be an integrated part of the existing M4 line called Cityringen Nordhavn Extension (CRNHE). The Nordhavn Extension shall be a fully elevated line of approximately 1,6 km with two stations; until further called v./Levantkaj and v./Nordhavn C. Metroselskabet have high ambitions for the extension to Nordhavn and to accommodate the need for lowered CO2-emissions see a need to rethink design processes and constructions. On that background Metroselskabet is aiming to sign a contract with a contractor who have a team of capable and experienced consultants, able to challenge our current understanding of the architecture of the stations and viaducts as well as methods of designing and constructing a metro. Metroselskabet is committed to delivering world-class sustainable transportation and aims to achieve this through the adoption of new ideas and innovative solutions. Metroselskabet have identified the following areas that will be of high priority during the CRNHE project: • Collaboration To accommodate the need for renewing the processes surrounding the project, Metroselskabet plans to work very closely with the contractor and the team to develop the project (see below). • Passengers The existing Copenhagen metro is a high-quality public transport service that provides robust and resilient operation in addition to a good, efficient and intuitive experience for all passengers. The extension is to provide the best possible passenger experience by making use of lessons from the existing metro in operation, which shall be an integrated part of the design process from the beginning. • Carbon footprint In terms of carbon footprint, Metroselskabet has an ambition to halve the carbon footprint from the construction phase of new Metro projects compared to the existing Metro at Orientkaj. The ambition shall be obtained mainly via design optimizations, new construction methods and material choices. • Emission free non-road machinery Metroselskabet has together with other partners defined and signed a declaration of intent, to integrate emission free non-road machinery on projects, please refer to this article describing the declaration of intent (in Danish): "Public construction clients sign declaration of intent". • Circular resource use Metroselskabet has a focus on applying the principles of circular economy in the way resources are being consumed. Metroselskabet will focus on reducing the consumption of natural resources and increase recirculation and recycling of materials and waste in constructing new Metro. • Metroselskabet is part of the City of Copenhagen’s partnership agreement for biodiversity together with 18 other landowners working to preserve and create new urban nature in the city. • Digital The goal of our digital ambition is to ensure that the project use digital solutions for innovation, sustainability, and to support efficient infrastructure solution that meets requirements for high quality, environmental considerations and advanced operations throughout the entire project lifecycle. Currently, Metroselskabet is finalizing documentation for the tender. The project will be tendered out as a design and build contract (ABT18) with an in-built close collaboration phase, where Metroselskabet together with the contractor and the contractor´s consultants will develop the design for the viaducts and the architecture of the stations. The tender documentation will have a very strong focus on the collaboration between the parties to achieve our ambitious goals for the project. Metroselskabet expects the contractor to bring consultants which are capable of executing the project but also consultants & architects to challenge the current perception of the architecture of the stations without compromising the passenger experience. Metroselskabet intends to use competitive dialogue as the procurement procedure as Metroselskabet intends to develop the final tender documentation with inputs from the tenderers. The tender is expected to be released early 2025. Metroselskabet would like to invite all interested parties to an information meeting on 2024.12.16 at 14:30-16:30 (local Danish time). The information meeting will be held at: Metroselskabet, Metrovej 5, 2300 Copenhagen S. Please, register for the meeting by emailing cafr@m.dk and let us know the number of participants. In order to ease the registration of the participants at the information meeting please indicate the names of the participants in your registration for the meeting. Due to the size of the venue for the meeting, Metroselskabet need to limit the number of participants per interested party to a maximum of 3. The information meeting is for physical attendees only. If you prefer a digital meeting, please let us know that as well. If there is sufficient interest for a digital meeting (via TEAMS) Metroselskabet will repeat the information meeting digitally.
