Description

As a rule, the guidelines for the construction of rural roads (RAL) only provide for certain node types for the different design classes (ECL). When connecting roads of EKL 2 with roads of EKL 2 or 3, semi-planned nodes are used. When connecting the ramp to a road of EKL 2, light signalling systems are used in the area of the junction for safety reasons, when connecting the ramp to a road of EKL 3, other solutions, such as a roundabout, can also be used. However, the RAL also permits deviations from the standard cases presented in exceptional cases to be justified. If high travel speeds are desired due to long travel distances, partial plan-free nodes can also be used. However, attention should be paid to continuity in the formation of successive nodes. On the other hand, even level crossings are possible if the traffic is of lesser importance. Both for newly planned roads of the EKL 2 and in the older stock of comparable lines of the interconnection function level LS II, it can be seen that both of these exceptional cases are more common. More recent studies on the operational limits and safety effects of planned and subplanned junctions in the course of EKL 2 roads, which also take into account the different financial costs and area consumption, in particular in the case of intersection structures, therefore do not exist. The aim of the research project is to define the operational limits of the different junction types in the course of roads of EKL 2 more clearly and to find a clearer demarcation. Road safety, traffic quality as well as cost-effectiveness and sustainability aspects for the node types and their environment are to be taken into account. Based on the knowledge gained in this way, recommendations are to be derived as to whether and to what extent the requirements of the RAL must be adapted.
