In implementation of one of the measures of the Action Plan for the Conservation of the Brown Bear in Bulgaria for the period 2024-2033, which is related to the assessment of the brown bear population in the country through genetic monitoring and genetic analysis, procedure No BG16FFPR002-3.013 ‘Monitoring of the population of the brown bear species’ under priority 3 ‘Biodiversity’ of the Environment Programme (PES) 2021-2027 was approved. The Executive Environment Agency (EEA) is a specific beneficiary of the procedure and the eligible partners are the State Forestry Enterprises under Article 163 of the Forestry Act and the Directorates of National Parks. The main activity in the implementation of the approved procedure is ‘Conducting genetic laboratory tests and carrying out analysis of the results of laboratory tests (DNA analysis) for the assessment of the brown bear population (Ursus arctos) on the territory of Bulgaria’, which is also in connection with Measure 7.3.1. of the ‘Action Plan for the Conservation of Brown Bear (Ursus arctos Linnaeus, 1758) in Bulgaria 2024-2033’ and is carried out in order to achieve the most reliable assessment of the population size of the species in Bulgaria.
