Description

− In the mid-1990s, the University opted for developments in Informix-4GL for the development of its management applications. In this environment, the Economic Management and Academic Management applications were developed. In 2005 the University decided to purchase the 4J’s product which provided the Informix-4GL with the possibility of using Windows systems as an application server and having a graphical client for users, as well as being able to offer self-services in a web environment. − Following this update in 2005 and some initial incidents resolved, the product remained stable and provided a satisfactory service without significant incidents until 1 April 2024. During these more than 15 years, no update or maintenance has been carried out on the 4J’s product. In all this time, the University has considered abandoning the developments in Four Js through two strategies: acquisition of management applications and developments in other technologies. − The Economic Management application has ceased to serve almost entirely. The Academic Management is in the process of being replaced by another application and the rest of the modules not covered by it will be developed in another technology. However, key processes within the scope of Academic Management continue to depend on developments made in Four Js. − As of April 1, 2024, we understand that, due to an update of the operating system of the application servers, three types of errors have begun to occur: − 1. Users don't boot the app for no apparent reason. It seems like a concurrency problem, that is, it happens when there are more users, but it is erratic. It does not always happen with the same number of users or with the same conditions. At the moment we have managed to detect when it happens, and we have managed to mitigate the problem. However, the solution we have applied is to periodically restart the web services of the machine that is totally discouraged by the Systems Area and that constitutes an emergency solution that should be temporary and very restricted in time. −2. Falls in Four Js Licensing Service. In order for a customer to be able to boot a program developed in 4J’s, there must be a product licensing service that indicates that it can be started. From the date indicated this service was stopped and the service was denied to all users both active users at that time and those who wanted to start their activity. The Systems Area has managed to mitigate the problem by initiating services through intermediate tools. Again, it is an emergency solution that does not guarantee that no new incidents will occur in the near future. In any case, occasional drops continue to occur in some of the servers. −3.Specific disconnections with graphic clients.Occasionally the connection is lost between the Four Js program that runs on the server and the graphical client that the user handles on his computer, etc. Text automatically translated in your browsing language Automatically translated
