Switzerland-Lausanne: Mass spectrometer
EPFL intends to purchase a MALDI Imaging Mass Spectrometer for its Lipid cell biology working group.
By combining the molecular specificity of mass spectroscopy with the spatial resolution of microscopy, MALDI-IMS allows in situ analyses of biomolecules:
— Analysis of differences in lipid composition at single cell level. Lipids have huge variations between cells from syngenic, homogeneous cell populations. Standard lipidomics allow the identification of composition, but is not able to detect single cell analysis and spatial distribution. With MALDI-IMS, we will explore the role of lipidheterogenicity at individual cell level;
— Analysis of the distribution of metabolites in cancer tissues.
