Description

The subject of the contract is a study on the economic importance of the Flemish ports. Until 2022, the National Bank of Belgium published an annual report on the ā€˜Economic Importance of Belgian Ports’. For 30 years, this study was an important reference for determining the importance of the ports for the region, for Flanders and for Belgium. It provided a science-based methodology to determine the effects in terms of added value, employment and investment, classified in a maritime and non-maritime cluster and in direct and indirect effects, with a series of figures dating back to 1995. The study was important not only for interpreting the social role of the ports, but also for the positioning of the ports in an international context. The National Bank of Belgium will no longer continue this study. Given that an objective determination of the economic importance based on unique source material is socially relevant, the Flemish government wants to put an order on the market to fill this gap.
