Geesthacht is a town in Schleswig-Holstein with about 31,000 inhabitants, and is located in the south-west of the Duchy of Lauenburg. The district of Lauenburg belongs to the metropolitan region of Hamburg (distance about 40km) and experienced an increase of the population from 1995 - 2015 from 12,000 to 16,000 inhabitants. This increases the need for municipal facilities, including an expanded school offer.
