Description

The main objective is to provide the Institut d’Aplicacions Computacionals i de Codi Comunitari Biodiversitat (IAC3-BIO) of the Universitat de les Illes Balears (UIB) with an advanced computing storage infrastructure. This infrastructure will meet the growing demands for data processing and storage capacity needed for genomics and biodiversity research projects. The main objective of the infrastructure that the UIB plans to acquire and deploy is to respond to the needs of users of supercomputing equipment in the Autonomous Community of the Balearic Islands (CAIB), mainly research groups from the departments and university institutes of the UIB. Part of the research of these groups depends on access to computational resources with the ability to efficiently execute highly parallelizable algorithms and process massive sets of data in a reasonable time. This infrastructure aims to achieve high levels of efficiency and promptness through massive sets of processors immersed in a properly connected shared memory architecture. This storage infrastructure will be crucial for the analysis and processing of genomic data, enabling the execution of large-scale DNA and RNA sequencing projects. The data generated by state-of-the-art sequencing equipment, such as PACBIO Sequel and Oxford Nanopore, will be stored and managed efficiently, facilitating access and analysis by researchers. In addition, the infrastructure will support the development and deployment of artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms applied to biodiversity. This includes processing large volumes of biological data for pattern identification and prediction of ecological behaviors. It will also allow the integration of data from various sources, improving the capacity to conduct multidisciplinary research. Likewise, this infrastructure will be used to store and analyze data from collaborative projects at national and international level, promoting scientific cooperation and knowledge transfer. The results of these investigations will contribute to the advancement of computational and biological science, and will strengthen the scientific and technological capabilities of the UIB and the CAIB. This action is part of the institutional responsibility of the UIB to fulfill the vision of the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) regarding the HPC services ecosystem in Europe. ESFRI aims to ensure access to world-class supercomputing facilities that enable cutting-edge research using the full spectrum of computational capabilities. In this line, the UIB designed and implemented an institutional project to equip itself with scientific supercomputing equipment based on cluster technology. This infrastructure allowed access to an intermediate-scale computing capacity (Tera-FLOP), but not to undertake first-scale projects (at Peta- and Exa-FLOP scale), having access to Singular Scientific and Technical Infrastructures (ICTS) coordinated at national level through the RES or at European level through PRACE. In addition, the current equipment has reached the end of its useful life completely amortized. The acquisition and deployment of the new storage infrastructure does not mean the mere replacement of the previous equipment but a quantitative leap in the competitiveness of the UIB and the technological and innovation environment of the CAIB in terms of massive data analysis, artificial intelligence (AI) and high performance computing (HPC).
