Supply of bunkering plant for liquid hydrogen (LH2)
The Institute of Maritime Energy Systems plans to build a research and bunkering facility for liquid hydrogen (LH2). The Bunkering Station enables the research and optimisation of refuelling and unloading operations (‘bunkering operations’) of ships with LH2, a potential climate-neutral fuel for shipping. The resulting bunker station offers a storage and processing system from LH2 for the port infrastructure in Kiel. Due to a central control system and a wide range of sensors, required data from various interfaces is recorded, which ensures increased safety for shipping operations with LH2. The system allows the transfer of LH2 from a donor tank to a target tank (e.g. on board a ship). Various parameters of the transfer can be set and the process can be observed and recorded by a variety of sensors. Among other things, the amount of the resulting ‘boil-off’ (evaporation losses) can be determined for various transfer parameters.
