Vrijwillige transparantie vooraf inzake aanschaf: Klystron modulators for electron lasers HFML/FELIX Radboud University
At the FELIX Laboratory we develop and exploit intense, short-pulsed infrared and Terahertz free-electron lasers. The infrared radiation of the FELIX lasers interacts with molecules and materials. This can reveal detailed information about their 3D structure, functional properties and electronic properties. Its unique characteristics make it a highly demanded user facility; yearly receiving typically a hundred researchers from all over the world to perform their experiments. Reproducibility and stability are key for the users of the facility to execute their experiments successfully. We strive for high uptime and as few interruptions as possible. For this reason, we need to be able to rely on our technical infrastructure. Unreliable parts or high maintenance demands cause downtime, which needs to be limited. The current klystron modulators have been developed and built in-house. Parts of these modulators start to show unreliable behavior, which leads to less stable operation and downtime. Some parts cannot be repaired or renewed, due to components not being available anymore. In order to regain stable operation, our klystron modulators need to be replaced. After consulting suppliers, only one can provide us with the klystron modulator we need to fit in our technical infrastructure. With this upgrade we will maximize our stability, reproducibility and uptime, while minimizing the need for maintenance and downtime.
