Description

Renewable energies (RE), which are produced, for example, with solar and wind power, are increasing sharply in India. By mid-2023, it reached 13 percent of national electricity generation. However, rapid RE expansion in an electricity system based primarily on coal and oil poses enormous operational, regulatory and structural challenges. The electricity supply with RE is affected by seasonal, time-of-day and weather-dependent fluctuations. Government officials and energy supply companies must therefore take measures to compensate for the fluctuations and thus ensure a reliable electricity supply. Goal The Indian electricity market is being prepared for the future to enable a higher RE share. Approach The project advises national and federal authorities in India in order to adapt, create and implement the framework conditions for an electricity market of the future in the context of the energy transition. It also trains government professionals and managers to create, adapt and implement the rules and incentives that reform the electricity market. The project specifically supports women by developing training courses in a gender-responsive manner and organising networking and mentoring programmes. In addition, the project develops and implements a demonstration project that creates innovative, gender-responsive services for electricity suppliers. It shows them how to adapt the power grid to fluctuations. The project also promotes dialogue between national and federal stakeholders through professional events.
