Description

The purpose of this consultation is to design/construct the temporary exhibition A Fight for Peace, Albert Kahn (1860-1940) (provisional title) of the Albert Kahn Departmental Museum. Unlike the permanent course, which offers an overview of Albert Kahn's project and an approach centered on the biography of the founder, the temporary exhibitions, through a documentary and sensitive approach, deepen the main themes of the work that resonate with current societal issues. In order to meet a wide audience, they are offered over a long period of time. Thus, the exhibition "Un combat pour la paix, Albert Kahn (1860-1940)" (working title) will be proposed from mid-October 2026 (provisional date), on the entire set dedicated to temporary exhibitions (572m2) for an approximate duration of 8 months. For its fourth major temporary exhibition, the new Albert-Kahn departmental museum puts at the heart of its purpose the fundamental principles of pacifism according to Albert Kahn. The exhibition focuses on Albert Kahn's relationship with pacifism, its motivations, expressions and contradictions. Although Albert Kahn devoted his life and fortune to promoting a project aimed at promoting dialogue between peoples and establishing peace, he was a witness or actor in the three wars that marked the Third Republic: Franco-German War of 1870; First World War; French campaign of 1940 and occupation. The exhibition will analyze the influence of wars on Kahn's pacifist conceptions, provide a historical context for this project and show how it fits into a broader dynamic, revealing the tensions between Kahn's pacifist ideals and geopolitical realities, particularly in a context where efforts to achieve lasting peace clashed with nationalist ambitions and the weaknesses of international institutions, which Kahn had helped create, in the 1920s and 1930s. The exhibition will be based on the collections of the Albert Kahn Museum: autochrome and monochrome photographs, films, and archives or objects. This corpus will be supplemented by loans, including graphic art, archives, documentation, and possibly objects, in order to complete the periods for which the MDAK collections are incomplete (1870, then the 1930s) but also to place Kahnian production in the historical and visual context of the twentieth century. The exhibition will evoke the visual manifestations of Kahn's pacifism, place them in a history of representations of war and peace, and evoke the intentions, technical means and receptions of this production. The project will also make the public discover the personalities who thought peace at the beginning of the 20th century and the role of Albert Kahn, his networks and foundations such as scholarships around the world, the National Committee for Social and Political Studies or financial investments for the University of Paris or the creation of the Cité Universitaire. These personalities can be embodied in particular by the "gallery of history", the portraits made in autochrome in the garden of Kahn. Contemporary works will respond to this historical corpus, revealing the resonances of the subjects evoked. Through its universal, committed and topical dimension, the theme of pacifism is aimed at a wide audience including adults and senior history lovers, and the younger public, in a logic of citizen awakening. The synopsis, the scientific intentions and the description of the works of this exhibition are detailed in the museum program Text automatically translated in your browsing language Automatically translated
