This announcement (PIN) announces a public market consultation and provides information on a planned pre-commercial procurement (PCP) on long-term energy storage. The project responds to the need for further development of scalable, largely location-independent long-term energy storage systems as system-relevant infrastructure in a defossilised energy system. The focus is not on (incremental) further developments of hydrogen-based seasonal storage systems or lithium-based short-term storage systems, but rather storage technologies with structurally favourable cost and loss characteristics with discharge times of between 10 hours and up to 150 hours.
