Description

The main church of St. Jacobi is one of the five so-called main churches of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. Despite many changes throughout history and massive destruction during the Second World War, the church is a testimony to the few surviving medieval buildings in the city center. It is a protected cultural property according to the Hague Convention, one of the most important medieval and early modern testimonies of building culture in Hamburg and was first mentioned in documents in 1255. Due to the largely preserved furnishings, it deserves a special place in the history of Hamburg's art and architecture. Due to the destruction of the war in 1944, the gradual reconstruction until the 1960s and repeated individual renovation measures, the church building could be made fully usable. However, in view of problematic site conditions and only selectively available refurbishment means, no long-term sustainable structural security has been achieved so far, so that a holistically designed refurbishment is urgently needed. In the course of one of the largest church construction projects in Germany, the church building as a monument is not only to be carefully renovated, but also modernized in a way that allows contemporary and future-oriented use. From its origins as a pilgrim's cap, St. Jacobi is once again an attraction for pilgrims far beyond northern Germany. The organ built by Arp Schnitger in 1693, which plays a central role in both historical and contemporary church music, is also a defining feature. In addition, an instrument from 1960/68 from the Lübeck workshop Emanuel Kemper is also available so far. The mostly late medieval and early modern art treasures are testimonies of faith, culture and history and must be preserved for future generations. This is also reflected in the decades-long cooperation with Hamburger Denkmalschutz and the jointly responsible restoration workshop, which is unique in Germany in this way. Valuable Hamburg cultural heritage is the so-called "Herrensaal" above the sacristy with its coats of arms and murals - the only baroque hall in Hamburg preserved at its original location. In terms of its historical mission and self-image, St. Jacobi sees itself as a "church for the city", which has a wide-ranging profile in Hamburg. This demand requires concepts for new, future-oriented and sustainable solutions, also in the operation of the building. This concerns both the optimisation of municipal and administrative spaces, including the establishment of accessibility for access, and the modernisation of technical infrastructures. In addition, the tower will offer an impressive view of the city panorama in the future. The goal is to equip the main church for the coming decades in terms of construction, equipment and infrastructure as an attractive place for meeting and contemplation in the city of Hamburg. The project is expected to receive funding from the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media and the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. Grant notices from the Federal Commissioner of the Federal Government for Culture and the Media and the Authority for Culture and the Media of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, Monument Protection Office, for phase 1, the planning up to the preparation of the building documentation, have been received. Taking into account these framework conditions and the financing available so far for the first phase, the implementation will take place in two stages. Initially, the planning services will be provided in project phase 1. Only on the basis of these plans, which have been agreed with all parties involved, can the decision be taken for the concrete implementation of the measures, taking into account the availability of the budget, if necessary also on the basis of packages and prioritisations to be formed (phase 2). In order to be able to prepare the necessary application and construction documents, the integration of planning and support services for the client is necessary. This has already been done through the commissioning of an architectural office and a project manager and has been and will be supplemented by the integration of various specialist planning and appraisal services. The contract was awarded to the architects Johannsen und Partner mbB based in Hamburg. The performance profile of the project management according to AHO was awarded to steg Hamburg mbH. According to current planning, it is assumed that the performance phase 3 of the HOAI will probably be completed on 31.12.2024 with the HU construction/construction documentation (significant milestone). After submission of the building inspection as well as the available budget, the further performance phases, including the construction work, are to follow. Completion of the overall action is planned for the end of 2029. Text automatically translated in your browsing language Automatically translated
