Description

In 2026, RIVM will move to a new building at Utrecht Science Park (USP). Currently, the institute is still located in Bilthoven. In preparation for this move, an extensive inventory was carried out of the laboratory equipment needed at the new location. A distinction has been made between ‘generic’ equipment and ‘specials’. Generic equipment, including various types of microscopes, has been purchased through a joint procurement process. Equipment is classified as generic and therefore included in the tender for generic equipment if the following three criteria are met: • general use in the lab • availability of multiple providers • interchangeability without affecting the research results. IDS-RIVM requires two EVOS fluorescence microscopes that do not fall under the generic category. These devices are essential for the development of new research goals: 1. Virus neutralisation tests: the development and implementation of neutralisation tests, involving virus detection by immunofluorescence techniques. These tests measure the presence and amount of neutralising antibodies, e.g. in serum. This makes it possible to determine whether a patient has undergone a viral infection, received a vaccination and to what extent he or she is protected against the virus in question. 2. Protein expression analyses: the detection and quantification of protein expression using immunofluorescence visualisation. For both applications, the advanced automation of the EVOS system is crucial, especially due to the need for high-throughput analysis. Currently, IDS-RIVM does not have an EVOS fluorescence microscope. Because the development of the neutralization tests cannot wait until after the move, it is necessary to install one of these microscopes already at the current location; It will be transferred to the USP. The second device will be put into use after the move and will only be delivered to the new location.
