Description

The client considers that the supply of a new mass spectrometer with the functionalities necessary for the client can only be provided by the selected company. The system was selected on the basis of the following unique technical feature: The Orbitrap Exploris 480 is characterized by an industry-unique mass resolution of up to 480,000 (at m/z 200). This high resolution is crucial for the differentiation of isobaric compounds – i.e. molecules with identical nominal mass, such as leucine and isoleucine (Δm = 0.003 Da). Thanks to the precise mass determination (accuracy < 1 ppm), the system allows the unique identification of such isomers, which is indispensable for the analysis of complex biological samples. Compared to competing systems, which typically achieve a maximum resolution of 120,000-140,000, these fail in differentiating closely adjacent masses. In paediatric research, where low abundant biomarkers (e.g. cytokines, metabolites) need to be detected in complex samples (e.g. plasma, fibroblast lysates), the Orbitrap Exploris 480 offers a key advantage: The combination of high resolution and excellent sensitivity (LOD < 1 fg/μL) enables the detection of molecules that cannot be detected on other systems. Quantitative analyses (e.g. protein expression studies) also show the superiority of the system: Overlapping isotope peaks, which lead to misinterpretations on conventional devices, are cleanly separated by the ultra-high resolution. This allows precise quantification (CV < 5%) even in complex dies. Without the unique resolution of 480,000 of the Orbitrap Exploris 480, central research approaches would be impossible. These include the quantification of low abundant proteins in patient fibroblasts (requires LOD < 10 fg/μL) and the analysis of post-translational modifications (e.g. phosphorylation) with < 1 ppm mass accuracy. The Orbitrap Exploris 480 with Vanquish Neo is technically unique and indispensable for the mentioned research projects.
