Description

The Mensa Süd is a state property, which was newly built in 1999 and is used by the Studierendenwerk Rostock-Wismar. The canteen has the task of providing students at a socially acceptable price (and, within the framework of free capacities, also university staff at a reasonable price). The Mensa Süd is the largest canteen in Rostock with currently up to 2,200 servings per day. In addition, field offices are also supplied with food. A total production capacity of up to 2,500 servings per day is therefore envisaged. The Mensa Süd is the only health care facility for students on the Campus Südstadt of the University of Rostock. It also serves the university library in the neighbouring building throughout the day. It is also to be operated continuously during the construction period via an interim mensa. Due to the age of the canteen and the currently problematic structural and technical condition, a feasibility study was prepared in 2023. In addition to the age-related structural and technical deficiencies, this also shows significant functional deficiencies, so that an originally planned gradual renovation is no longer expedient. The comprehensive feasibility study proves the need for a full renovation or a new building as well as the need for a short-term provision of an interim solution. As a result, the feasibility study and a comprehensive variant study confirm the variant, which provides for the installation of a container interim mensa in the parking lot opposite (B-Plan Pulverturm) with subsequent new construction of the canteen at the same location, as the most economical variant.
