In relation to the objectives of the GREENH2CM project, the design and acquisition of a modular and multi-stack electrolyser is proposed to carry out the tasks associated with this project. Within the framework of the GREENH2CM project, among other tasks, the development of an experimental facility for the production of hydrogen on an industrial scale through renewable sources with field generation capacity is contemplated. The objective is to carry out the relevant tests and trials to integrate renewable generation systems and electrolysers, so that renewable generation adapts to the optimized operation of such electrolysers. Within the GREENH2CM project, on the one hand, this electrolyser allows to carry out an experimental hydrogen production facility with a modular and multi-stack PEM concept, to study the different controls and configurations of the equipment with the aim of improving the capacity factor and the efficiency of current hydrogen production systems. On the other hand, it will allow characterizing its behavior and validating its response to a variable electricity generation, studying the aging and degradation of the equipment, and creating a dynamic model of the system to analyze its behavior in other situations. With these functionalities, it is intended to carry out a comprehensive study on how to adapt renewable generation to the specific consumption needs of hydrogen production equipment, and thereby propose and test controls and configurations to optimize the production of green hydrogen and make it commercially competitive. It is therefore a question of providing the Department of Energy of CIEMAT with a unique equipment, a PEM type electrolyser of 60 kW, mainly motivated by its acquisition by the current context of achieving a 100% renewable system by 2050 through the promotion of green H2 as a strategic energy carrier for Spain, as well as by the reduction of emissions and enhancement of a hydrogen economy. Its acquisition will allow the Center to position itself in this area and strengthen its experimental facilities. The use of this equipment in the scaling of the concepts validated by CIEMAT at laboratory scale can represent a significant advance within the area of electrolytic production of green hydrogen from renewable energies and will open the doors to new collaborations with different research centers and companies in the sector.
