Description

The Monument of Freedom (Monument) is a monument built on Mount St. Nicholas. The monument was erected to perpetuate the feat of fighting for Bulgaria’s freedom at the site defended during the Battle of Shipka, around which the decisive battles of the Russo-Turkish War and the Liberation of Bulgaria took place in the summer of 1877. The monument is part of the Shipka-Buzludzha National Park Museum. The conservation and restoration works of the Monument, detailed in the design parts and the Technical Specification, aim to restore the Monument’s vision to the original design of the creators of the Monument in all its rawness. The subject of the contract includes not only activities related to the conservation and restoration of the facades of Shipka Park, but also those related to the interior, the adjacent outdoor areas and the exterior of the building. The aim is to restore the authentic appearance in the interior spaces of the Monument by repairing and restoring all installations and the entire movable and immovable material base on all its floors and creating a visitor experience based on the process of climbing to the survey site passing through harsh-looking spaces. Intended restoration interventions on the exterior of the Monument are removal of surface contamination, biocide treatment, destruction of unstable fragments of stone blocks, replacement of stone blocks that have been assessed to be in a severe condition and are not capable of installing anchors with new blocks of the same material (if possible the same color) - dolomite, removal of the original grouting and laying of new, hydrophobization of the entire surface of the exterior facades of the Monument, installation of bird spikes. The spikes are positioned longitudinally from the outer edges to the windows and conservation of the metal letters of the inscriptions ‘Stara Zagora’, ‘Shipka’, ‘Sheinovo’ and ‘Fighters for Freedom’. Restoration works must be subject only to the correct decision, which is the actual decision of the original project, and include activities on: 1.Restoration of the authentic appearance in the interior spaces by removing all added over the years experimental layers of bitumen, styrofoams, ceramic bricks, plasters and the built-in reotans.2.Repair and restoration of the staircases and railings. 3.Repair and restoration of the floors. 4.Restoration of all original windows and supplying them with reliable devices for frequent opening and closing with adjusting elements. 5.Deconstruction of the material from the destroyed joints on the facade surfaces 6.Replacement of the squares, which have severe problems with new from the authentic building material. 7. Filling and processing of damask and cracks in the building quads. 8. Filling the formed spaces in the joints of the outer layer of quads on the facades with material and technology as prescribed in the working design. 9.Make new grouting with material and technology as prescribed in the working technical design. 10.Renovation of lightning protection installations. 11.Renewal of electrical installations and electrical panels. 12.Installation of a new power installation with outlets for contacts according to the predictions of the future working project. 13.Installation of lighting installation to ensure the normative illumination and at the same time to be subordinated to the architectural development for the interior. 14.Construction of artistic lighting for accents in the zone of window niches. 15.Construction of network installations to enable the use of modern imaging and sound devices. 16.Installation of new fire-fighting installations. 17.Construction of new security – signal and video surveillance installations. 18.Implementation of the solution envisaged by the project under OJ and K. 19.Restoration of the original doors with integration in their structure of louver sections to correspond to the requirements of the new project under OJ and K. 20.Rethinking the current function of a museum in the interiors with the traditional elements and creating appropriate conditions for visual and sound modeling in the interior spaces plus adequate solutions in the spirit of interior design of exhibition modules for displaying various thematic collections related to historical events and their participants. 21.Updating and improving the artistic lighting for the facades. 22.Main repair of the entrance staircase. 23.Processing the adjacent spaces and paving them with a durable material of durable stone for the site. The construction is a first group, first category letter ‘m’ – ‘Cultural property of national importance’.Volume of the area subject to exterior works, 2180 sq.m. Volume of the area subject to interior works, 1260 sq.m. Total area for conservation and restoration - 3440 sq.m.
