Проведените през 2014 г. европейски избори бяха първите след влизането в сила на Договора от Лисабон, съдържащ нови разпоредби относно избора на председател на Европейската комисия. През 2014 г. всяка от основните политически партии в Европа излъчи кандидат за председател на Европейската комисия, който да ръководи кампанията им. Не за първи път партиите номинират водещи кандидати, но за първи път
беше направен опит за провеждането на паневропейски предизборни кампании. Като цяло системата с водещ кандидат се отрази положително на взаимоотношенията между институциите на ЕС и ефективността на работата им.
