On 17 November 2021, the European Commission adopted the Communication “EU Soil Strategy for 2030 ‘Reaping the benefits of healthy soils for people, food, nature and climate’”. It provides a framework of voluntary and legal measures for the protection, restoration and sustainable use of soils. The strategy sets the vision that “by 2050, all EU soil ecosystems are in healthy condition and are thus more resilient”. It aims to mobilise the necessary societal engagement and financial resources, and support shared knowledge, sustainable practices and monitoring to reach EU objectives. In particular, the Soil Strategy encourages Member States to set up a ‘Test your soil for free’ initiative. Setting up the ‘Test your soil for free’ initiative, whilst encouraged, is entirely voluntary for Member States, who retain the discretion to implement the initiative in full, in part, or not at all. Healthy soils are essential for achieving climate neutrality, a clean and circular economy and halting desertification and land degradation. They are also essential to reverse biodiversity loss, provide healthy food and safeguard human health. Soil testing is an important component in the process to achieve healthy soils. It is required to determine the status of different soil characteristics and to understand the overall health status of the soil. The results of soil testing can be used to make informed decisions on soil management, including which sustainable soil management practices to implement to maintain healthy soils and where action is required to regenerate unhealthy soils.
