HomeImprovement of special steel production by use of an ‘endless lining’ system for monolithic ladle linings

The aim of the project was to introduce the endless lining system of ladles with monolithic castables, which is state of the art in mass steel production, to special steel. Its application is much more difficult for the production of steel because of higher treatment temperatures, more intensive ladle metallurgical work, more aggressive slags and longer treatment times which give higher stresses to the refractory material. The partners involved were Breitenfeld Edelstahl (Austria), Outokumpu Polarit Oy, formerly Avesta Polarit (Finland), Acerinox SA (Spain), Benteler Steel Plant AG (Germany) and Duisburg University (Germany). Based on the laboratory work and many corrosion tests at Duisburg University spinel forming castables suitable for ladles in special steel production could be found and tested. The field tests of Breitenfeld Edelstahl and Benteler Steel Plant showed for special steel producers the possibility of using monolithic refractory materials in the bottom and wall areas of steel ladles. An outcome of the project is that successful application of castables in the slag line area is not advisable. For special steel producers, a zoned lining of monolithic ladles with MgO-C bricks in the slag line area has to be recommended. At Breitenfeld Edelstahl, the lifetime of ladles could be remarkably raised by monolithic lining and relining. Further, an improvement of the steel cleanness could be found. Acerinox showed the possibility to find a break-even for the specific refractory costs. The endless lining system technique is based on special installations, including feeders, mixers and special dryers. Missing these adapted installations leads to insufficient results as Avesta Polarit stated for the use of monolithics. For safe drying of monolithics without material damage or dangerous explosions, the use of special dryer units and drying procedures are necessary.
