HomeImprovement in constitutive equations for forming of austenitic stainless steel sheets

The aim of the project was to develop new constitutive equations suitable to take into account all the relevant parameters affecting the behaviour of austenitic stainless steel during the forming process. To support the objective of the research project, tensile tests, forming tests and microstructural analyses were conducted on six grades of ISO 1.4301 (AISI 304) stainless steel. For five grades, two solutions were tested, respectively, with low and high carbon content. The complete chemical composition characterisation was determined on aIl the available grades. The volume fractions were determined for selected deformation levels to quantify the strain-induced martensite. Three different new constitutive equations for forming of AISI 304 are proposed. Comparison with the results of experimental tests allowed the validation of the developed constitutive equation and characterisation of the best mode!. The new constitutive relationship was implemented into finite element codes, used to simulate a series of deep drawing experiments. The constitutive equation proposed is for general use within the compositional range considered in the project. The use of this model (because of the hypotheses that have carried to the formulation of the final equation) should be verified in the presence of a high martensite amount. By using this equation in simulations, it is possible to optimise the forming process in order to make it robust with respect to the use of different steel compositions, obtaining a scrap reduction. Another aspect in the process optimisation is the possibility of reducing the stamping steps.
