Natura 2000
Protecting Europe’s biodiversity
Publication metadata
From the flower-rich meadows of the Alps to the windswept shores of the Atlantic, from the vast flat plains of Hungary to the lush beech forests of central Europe, from the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean to the lonely peatbogs of Lapland, Europe has a wonderfully rich and varied biodiversity. The European Natura 2000 Network is designed to safeguard this valuable resource for
generations to come. It enables all 27 European Union Member States to work together, irrespective of national boundaries to conserve Europe’s special habitats and wildlife. Already over 24,000 sites have been included in the Network. This book tells the story behind this remarkable achievement and takes the reader on a journey through some of the finest Natura 2000 sites in Europe.
