In recent decades it has become increasingly evident that our society has been placing increasingly negative pressures on the marine environment.The impacts of climate change, air and water pollution, poorly regulated waste management, development pressures destroying coastal habitats and over exploitation of marine resources have all combined to result in significant loss of marine biodiversity and decline in the stock of marine resources. Initial responses to this have been varied with actions at national and international level addressing individual issues. This has included legislation to control polluting activities and efforts to designate marine protection areas of different kinds aimed at protecting threatened wildlife and reducing the over exploitation of marine resources.
