The FREQTIGUE project investigated the load frequency effect on fatigue properties and testing procedures. To achieve this, the seven project partners organized a distributed and extensive test program where testing at different load frequencies and with different test materials were performed at the seven different test laboratories. Steel grades intended for automotive applications, three bar steel grades (38MnSiVS5, 50CrV4, 16MnCr5) and three flat steel grades (M800HY, CP1000, DP1180), were tested at load frequencies between 2 and 20 000 Hz. Testing was performed for fatigue strength and fatigue crack growth parameter determination under laboratory test conditions and related to automotive component applications. A theoretical microstructure based visco-plastic crystal plasticity model was developed for prediction of crack propagation and fatigue strength. The model was verified against project experimental results. Further models for stress intensity description of complex crack geometries and thermal conditions around a growing fatigue crack tip were undertaken. Methods for analysis of crack propagation testing at 20 kHz were developed. Crack growth testing displayed no significant effect of load frequency on crack growth parameters. An extensive test program for fatigue strength testing was accomplished, 132 tests in uniaxial tension and 38 tests in bending and torsion, and effects of mean load and notches were taken in account. Test rigs for 20 kHz bend and torsion testing were built. Variations of fatigue strength with load frequency were found, although influence is possible from other variables. A proposal is that strain-rate and localized temperature effects depending on load frequency play a role in fatigue strength dependence of load frequency.
