HomeCharacterisation, modelling and validation of the impact of the iron and steelmaking slags used in road construction on groundwater

The aim of the project was to assess the impact of iron and steelmaking slags used in road construction on soils and groundwater. The project was based on laboratory tests, in-situ investigations and modelling work. Four base slags (EAF, BOF, GBF, BFair) and three mixtures were studied. Different tests (chemic-physical analysis, various leaching and percolation tests, hydrodynamic characterisation) were carried out to characterise the materials, and more especially the behaviour of the slags and mixture studied with water. The mobilisation kinetics of the elements studied were determined. The results coming from rack lysimeters as input data for the model were selected. The analytical hydrodispersive model MISP (from BRGM, French Geological Survey) was selected as the most appropriate. The modelling work was based on sensitivity tests and on possible typical European cases. The sensitivity tests take into account different parameters, such as geometry of the infrastructure, aquifer typology and productivity, rainfall, and characteristics of the slag layer. The relative influence of the different parameters on groundwater was assessed. The results lead to general recommendations for the use of the different slags studied. In-situ experiments were carried out at two sites: an ancient road and an experimental site. The main results obtained are the characterisation of the evolution of underlying soils and the evolution of leachates composition with time. Unfortunately, the data obtained were not sufficient to validate the model and are used in a qualitative way for the modelling exploitation.
