This report contains the joint contributions of the collaborative ECSC project between Corus UK Ltd (coordinator), Centro Sviluppo Materiali (CSM), Helsinki University of Technology (HUT), Sidenor I+D and VDEh - Betriebsforschungsinstitut (BFI). The aim of the project was to develop a quality prediction forecasting method to give an overall picture of both the internal and surface quality of the as-cast semi on a per metre basis. Various approaches to the prediction have been considered which include mathematical models, artificial neural networks, self-organising maps and other databased methods using so-called 'fuzzy logic' and statistical techniques. The casting defects investigated have been defined and the key casting and machine parameters for inclusion in the quality prediction scheme have been considered. To calibrate the development of the various quality prediction models, a collection of historical data was made. The work has resulted in an online slab quality prediction system which is applicable to all slab casters.
