Nuclear safety
Our common interest
Publication metadata
Around a quarter of the electricity and half of the low-carbon electricity in the EU is generated by nuclear energy. Plant operators, under the supervision of national regulatory authorities, are responsible for the safety of their installations. With the amendment to the 2009 Nuclear Safety Directive, adopted by the Council on 8 July 2014, Europe significantly enhances its leadership in nuclear
safety worldwide. It takes account of the lessons learned from the Fukushima nuclear accident, the EU nuclear stress tests, and the requirements of the Western European Nuclear Regulators Association and the International Atomic Energy Agency.
