Aim of the project was the first worldwide industrial demonstration of an innovative AC electrolytic process at the Marcegaglia A&PL.1. The new AC tank has been conceptually designed on the basis of labs trials and intensive modeling activities. After the design and erection activities, the line was successfully started-up. The Operating Procedures for both S-Steel and C-Steel have been defined and optimized through extensive industrial trials. The surface of obtained products have been characterized by means of SEM investigations, OM observations and technological tests and compared with reference surface. After more than 3 years of line-running and more than 400kt of stainless steel produced the advantages of adopting AC process/Technology can be clearly stated. Regarding S-Steel the AC pickling contributes to a dramatic improvement of line productivity (A&PL.1 up to 25%), .produces a meaningful reduction of fresh chemicals consumptions (up to 25% vs mixed acid). C-Steel were successfully processed with AC pickling tank and then pickled in labs-scale with HCl baths. The surface analysis confirmed the possibility to adopt AC has a booster in pickling lines, increasing the line speed up to 20%. The reliability and flexibility of the adopted technologies (cell arrangement, sludge removal, electrodes,…) have been demonstrated through intensive monitoring campaign and off-line evaluations. Finally a detailed cost analysis validated the high potential of AC technologies. Concerning S-Steel it has been shown that the adoption of AC tank reduces OPEX and increases the operative margin in the A&P Lines so that the increasing in CAPEX is quite negligible.
