Nanosciences and nanotechnologies (N&N) have crystallised in recent years the attention of policymakers and civil society organisations because they are illustrative of societal controversies that science may generate from time to time. Indeed they carry lots of hope regarding potential benefits for human health, the environment and quality of life but at the same time they generate worries about risks to health and the environment, as well as for ethics and the respect of fundamental rights. Further to a public consultation held in 2007, the European Commission adopted, on 7 February 2008, a recommendation to the Member States on a code of conduct for responsible N&N research. This recommendation was followed on 26 September 2008 by Council Conclusions.
