Accelerated low-water corrosion (ALWC) is a specific corrosion phenomenon which is microbially influenced and leads to premature perforation of some steel sheet piling walls at the low-water level. Although the mechanisms are not fully understood, the primary requirement of end-users is for practical engineering solutions. Therefore, this multipartner investigation was carried out with the following objectives: - to develop methods of assessing the risk of ALWC; - to evaluate possible methods of protecting steel piling structures against ALWC. A database was established from a detailed examination of 22 steel sheet piling structures (both affected and unaffected). A statistical analysis of this database led to a preliminary risk-assessment model. Some additional analyses showed other physical and chemical differences between the two groups of sites. Four possible protection methods were examined, i. e. low-alloy steels, periodic cleaning of steel sheet piling, cathodic protection and organic coating. Cathodic protection and organic coatings, alone or in combination, gave a high level of protection and can be recommended. Finally, a test programme carried out on an actual structure affected by ALWC provided a suitable repair procedure.
