Meteorology applied to urban air pollution problems : working group 2 : surface energy balance and mixing heights : surface energy balance in urban areas : extended abstracts of an expert meeting
Publication metadata
The COST working group meeting was arranged to bring together experts to present reports on the current understanding on the surface energy balance in urban areas and to discuss future research needs. Eight presentations were given at the meeting in Antwerp (12 April 2000), consisting of both experimental and numerical contributions. This volume contains the extended abstracts submitted after the
meeting in the temporal order of the presentations at Antwerp. Rotach discusses proper siting of urban meteorological instrumentation and summarises the requirements for meteorological instruments in urban studies. Grimmond and Oke report on their measurement campaigns in several North American cities conducted over a 10-year period. De Ridder's topic is advantages and disadvantages of remote sensing of the urban energy balance by satellite. Masson et al. carried out a numerical study using the mesoscale atmospheric model MESO-NH in combination with the town energy budget (TEB) scheme to compute urban surface fluxes to investigate the influence of Paris on the atmospheric boundary layer. Oke and Grimmond compare conventional views of urban-rural surface energy balance differences with measurements undertaken in Sacramento, Tucson and Vancouver. Ellis and Middleton report on field measurements of the surface fluxes at an industrial site in Birmingham, UK. Guilloteau and Dupont investigate the behaviour of a new urban soil model on five typical European quarters with imposed atmospheric data derived from the Hapex-Mobilhy experiment. Martilli et al. parameterise heat and momentum fluxes in urban areas by taking into account roofs, walls and the canyon floor, to be used for mesoscale models, tested for 2D idealised cases of an urban boundary layer.
