This collaborative, multinational project involving Corus UK (ex British Steel), Corus lJmuiden (ex Hoogovens, the Netherlands), ISPAT-Hamburger Stahlwerke (Germany) and Sidenor I+D (Spain), was aimed at the development of an optimun strategy to minimise segregation in the billet casting route. Besides the study of specific technologies designed to minimise segregation during billet casting, the effect of process variables on segregation and their interaction with the technologies identified were investigated. The two process variables that were observed to have a significant improvement on central segregation were casting with low superheat and using a submerged pouring practice. Thermal soft reduction, final EMS and mechanical soft reduction were shown to have a positive benefit on central segregation, but their application at the ideal conditions at the core of the billet was difficult due to caster process variations. The tundish capacity was observed to limit the injection rate of cored wire coolant and consequently control of superheat. By far the most successful technique investigated was that of intense secondary cooling. Corus UK, Corus lJmuiden and Sidenor all observed an improvement in the centreline segregation and ISPAT-HSW were able to show improvements in segregation by further development of their intense cooling set-up. Intense secondary cooling is the technology recommended for the optimal strategy to minimise central segregation during the billet casting of high carbon steel grades.
