The European Commission has been promoting animal welfare for over 40 years, especially as citizen expectations on animal-husbandry standards have been increasing. Recently, it has added the use of antimicrobials in animal production to its priorities in order to address resistance to those drugs. This study highlights how the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) has contributed to improving animal welfare and reducing the use of antimicrobials by fostering implementation of specific on-farm practices.
