QuADRANT is a European project on clinical audit of medical radiological procedures as mandated in the BSSD. QuADRANT has specific objectives – to provide an overview of European clinical audit implementation; identify good practices and resources; provide guidance and recommendations to improve clinical audit uptake; and, identify potential for European action on quality and safety in the three project disciplines, radiology, radiotherapy, nuclear medicine. Developments in infrastructure are required: national clinical audit bodies, overseeing audit participation, are recommended. National professional societies have a pivotal role by providing clinical expertise and access to professional networks. Resource allocation and increased national prioritisation of clinical audit is required. Other barriers to implementation include lack of staff time and expertise. Incentives for clinical audit participation are underutilised. Accreditation and certification systems can play an important role and should include assessment of clinical audit participation. Clinical audit should be embedded in healthcare professionals’ education programmes. A more active role for patients in clinical audit practice and policy is recommended. Awareness of the BSSD requirements for clinical audit is variable. Work is needed to ensure regulatory inspections incorporate an assessment of clinical audit, which should extend to all clinics and specialties involved in patient exposure to ionising radiation.
