The project has mainly focused on the investigation of the influence of hot-strip cross-sectional profile, camber and other process variables on cold mill processing and quality, as well as the adaptation and adjustment of the set-up and control to the length-dependent hot-strip characteristics and the compensation of disturbances. The project has significantly enhanced the understanding of the influence of many parameters (such as entry thickness profile, hot-strip camber, roll force) on the cold-rolling processing and the cold-strip quality characteristics. Correlations between these parameters and between them and the quality measures have been established. A working theee-head strip camber measurement facility has been installed and commissioned at the entry end of a pickle line. A new control system has been developed and tested that contributes to the improvement of inter-stand and product flatness. The improvement in flatness performance is greatest at coil transitions, where there is a step change in strip entry profile and roll force. The new control system is excellent groundwork towards an integrated (coordinated) control system for the whole mill considered.
