Influence of climatic parameters on the corrosion properties of coil-coated materials

The influence of climatic parameters such as the drying cycle, salt concentration, UV, SO2, salt time and acidity in the rain on the degradation of coil-coated materials used in the building industry has been systematically studied with respect to edge creep and the nature of the corrosion products formed in the edge areas. From the results, the influence of each parameter alone or in combination has been determined with respect to the degradation of prepainted hot-dip galvanised and prepainted Alunzinc materials. From the results, the influence of the climatic factors with regard to edge creep has also been determined. For prepainted hot-dip galvanised steel, the importance of primary factor decreased in the following order: SO2 > chloride concentration > acidity = salt time > wetness = drying cycle > UV. For prepainted Alunzinc, the primary factors decreased in the following order: chloride concentration > SO2 = wetness = drying cycle > salt time > acidity > UV. The results have also been compared to those obtained after two years of exposure at Bohus Malmön (marine environment) and Cayenne (tropical environment). The results indicate that only tests including SO2 were able to mimic the nature of corrosion products found after two years of exposure at Bohus Malmön. From the results a new cyclic corrosion test is proposed. This test also shows good correlation to the field data with respect to the nature of the corrosion products formed at the edge area.
