HomeNew approaches to non-destructive characterisation of microstructure and applications to online control of steel quality (NANDACS)

The present project aims to capitalise on recent developments for two methods of non-destructive characterisation, capable of being applied online to all types of steels at ambient as well as at high temperature. X-ray diffraction: Using equipment which was defined and built during the project, we showed the feasibility of obtaining diffraction patterns at room temperature and during heating to elevated temperature. We defined two parameters in the diffracted signal processing in order to obtain correlation with microstructural parameters: the location of the diffraction peaks in the pattern and the intensity of the 99.95 percentile in the diffraction image. Laser-based ultrasonic: Operative conditions were optimised and we studied the influence of several causes of disturbances in laboratory and online conditions. Trials made on a cold rolling pilot and in plants showed the feasibility of laser-based ultrasonic for working in industrial conditions. Two important ultrasonic signal features are used for microstructural analysis: wave velocity and wave attenuation. Specific signal processing was developed or adapted. We demonstrated the capability of these two approaches to characterise several metallurgical phenomena in different temperature conditions: grain size measurement, texture transformation and recrystallisation.
