Eurobarometer 2005
Publication metadata
The European Commission has carried out two public opinion surveys ('Eurobarometer') at the beginning of 2005, for the first time ever in 32 European countries. Two reports, entitled 'Europeans, Science and Technology' and 'Social values, Science and Technology', have been published. The first one presents the main trends regarding public perception of science and technology in Europe while the
latter assesses values and ethical principles of European citizens as weIl as their views on scientific and technological advance. The reports show that Europeans put great trust in science and technology. lnterest in science and technology remains high. A spectacular change concerns scientific knowledge, which has increased markedly in most EU countries over the last few years. However, there is still a gap of understanding between science and society, which has led to some scepticism and serious concerns about certain scientific developments. The reports and data are available to decision-makers, educators, researchers, and to any one interested in science and technology. With the 'Science and Society' action plan adopted in December 2001 and through the EU research Framework Programme, the European Commission is firmly committed to develop and foster the dialogue between science and society.
