Guidance document on Inland waterway transport and Natura 2000
Sustainable inland waterway development and management in the context of the EU Birds and Habitats Directives
The guidance document concentrates on the construction, maintenance and upgrading of infrastructure projects related to commercial inland waterway transport. The guidance document limits itself to developments in inland waterways and does not cover developments that are located in estuaries or coastal areas. The Commission produced a separate guide on these activities in 2010 entitled "The implementation of the Birds and Habitats Directives in estuaries and coastal zones, with particular attention to port development and dredging". Finally, the document focusses specifically on the... development of inland waterway transport infrastructure as well as on the conservation of rivers from the perspective of protecting Europe’s rare species and habitats under the EU Birds and Habitats Directives and in the wider context of the Water Framework Directive. Other relevant EU environmental laws relating for instance to water or air pollution, or to climate change, whilst also relevant to inland waterways are not covered in this document but are mentioned where appropriate for the sake of completeness.
