A study of the hot scarfing process has been carried out on a wide range of steel types. The effects of process variables have been investigated using a pilot plant machine to scarf the top surface of 100 mm section billets. Scarf depth has been determined in each case and an assessment made of the surface quality. Complementary metallographic examination of the subsurface structure has been made, and fume, metal and oxide dross characteristics defined.
