Main objective of the project “Flexible production of coke using alternative coals – effects on coke properties under blast furnace conditions”- FLEXCOKE - was to increase the flexibility using alternative carbon sources in safe cokemaking and to produce coke of a quality that meets the requirements for stable blast furnace (BF) operation aiming to reduce costs for hot metal production with similar/lower carbon input and CO2 emission. This is of importance with a global market characterised by limited availability and high costs for high quality coking coals. The uniqueness of the research was... to link alternative C-containing material in cokemaking to coke properties and behaviour in BF operation with use of new innovative test methods in combination with samples from BF testing. Properties of alternative C-containing materials/coals of economic/technical interest for cokemaking were collected. A test method for innovative test regimes has been developed and used aiming for a method with correlation of coke properties with the actual BF. Selected coal blend/C-containing materials effects on cokemaking, coke properties in standard and innovative coke tests and in the BF have been identified. Microstructure evaluation during standard and innovative coke tests were compared with samples from the LKAB Experimental BF (EBF ). Industrial alternative coke production and BF testing gave valuable information of the effects using alternative materials. High temperature characteristics and behaviour were studied with solid sample evaluation from the EBF high temperature area. Operational test data from the EBF and SSAB coke plant and industrial BF using alternative coke have been evaluated.
