Prolonging life time of old steel and steel-concrete bridges (PROLIFE)
Final report
Publication metadata
With thousands of old European steel and composite bridges, there is a need of rational methods to strengthen existing bridges to compensate not only for their age, but also for higher and more frequent loads. This report is based on three distinctive ideas which each has the potential to reduce strengthening costs as well the environmental impact and traffic disturbance. Introduction of composite
action or strengthening of existing shear connection by post-installed shear connectors. An extensive literature study as well as push-out tests and monitoring of a bridge with post-installed coiled spring pins have been carried out. Introduction of horizontal trusses between the lower flanges for I-girder bridges, giving the very fatigue-sensitive I-girders box-like behavior. Three bridges have been modelled for this concept. Furthermore, a novel concept for friction connections between the trusses and the bottom flanges has been tested. Effective methods for strengthening of old steel truss bridges. Four bridges have been analyzed with FEM and the models have been calibrated by monitoring three of these bridges. Furthermore, methodologies for estimation of the service life of a bridge, before and after strengthening, as well as for life cycle cost analysis have been developed. To support decision makers a multi-criteria decision scheme, to evaluate various strengthening strategies, has also been generated. Besides a successful kick-off workshop in Stockholm and a seminar at IABSE in Vancouver 2017, the project has been disseminated through 50 conference/journal papers and one Doctoral Thesis.
